Showtime Not Confident About a Second Season of Twin Peaks

We’re entering into the final five episodes of Showtime’s “Twin Peaks” revival, and I’m worried that the storylines we’ve been given won’t come together to form a satisfying conclusion. In fact, I’m afraid that we’re going to get another Season 2 finale, which has me slightly terrified.

The only thing that could make me feel more safe and certain about how this season is progressing is if Showtime, David Lynch, and Mark Frost could lock another set of episodes for next year. Alas, it looks like that might not be happening…

Facing reporters at the Television Critics Association summer 2017 press tour last night, Showtime CEO David Nevins explained, “I don’t think so, but it’s not impossible. [David Lynch and I are] both avoiding the conversation for a while; we want to let the story coalesce and see how people feel at the end.”

The revival didn’t pull in astronomical numbers upon its premiere but rather has done very well for Showtime via the network’s streaming services, something Nevins fully appreciates. “I’m really happy with the performance. It drove our business in a way that almost nothing else could. It’s been interesting and maybe it’s a blinding glimpse of how Netflix looks at the world but [it had] a palpable effect on subscribers even though its overall numbers are not as big as our biggest shows. But it’s had a very palpable effect on subscribers for multiple months now,” he states.

He continued by saying, “It’s a way higher proportion of streaming than anything else. The second quarter has always been our weakest quarter and [operating income] was up 11 percent and you can assume that Showtime was up a higher percentage to drive that. That’s new subscriptions driven largely by ‘Twin Peaks’; [it] was the biggest factor in that. It did its job for being such an unusual show for us.

So while the show doesn’t perform too admirably live, which could simply be because of other shows in that time block, it’s doing very well for the company when it comes to streaming. Since that’s such a big part of how people consume media these days, that’s a huge win.

Stay tuned for more as it comes.
