True Blood’s Top 9 Most Shocking Death Scenes

Post Thumb:

When the wonderful Ms. Charlaine Harris sat down to scratch out the first lines of Dead Until Dark, the first of The Southern Vampire Mysteries that would go on to become the basis for HBO’s series “True Blood,” there’s no way should could have known it was going to go on to become the mega-hit we know today.

However, that is exactly what happened. The book series is just now wrapping up after 13 novels, but “True Blood,” the beloved television version of Sookie Stackhouse’s adventures with all types of supernatural creatures, is still going strong. When we think back on the sizable cast of the show, we certainly remember some shocking death scenes. Although the show has had its share of peaks and valleys, it certainly never misses a chance to shock its loyal audience, and we recall some of those shocks in this look back at the Top 9 Most Shocking “True Blood” Death Scenes.

Of course we have to throw a couple honorable mentions out there first: She was one of the original murder victims that really set the tone for “True Blood,” Adele Stackhouse (more commonly known as Sookie’s “Gran”) was in the wrong place at the wrong time when Rene Lenier came to her residence to kill Sookie. He ended up killing Gran instead. Sam Merlotte’s brother, Tommy Mickens, got a chance to make some brotherly amendments before he succumbed to his injuries from the hands of the wolf pack. “Eggs” Benedict Tally was the victim of Jason Stackhouse’s itchy trigger-finger when Jason misinterpreted Eggs’ surrender as an attack on Sheriff Andy Bellefleur. And although her head-twisting sex scene with Bill Compton was even more stunning than her death, Lorena Krasiki’s extermination at the hands of Sookie was a thriller!

Longshadow (Raoul Trujillo)
Longshadow was the first shocking vampire death on “True Blood.” After Eric Northman enlisted Sookie Stackhouse and her psychic abilities to help him find out who was skimming from the till at Fangtasia, Sookie helped identify bartender Longshadow as the culprit. One thing led to another, and Bill ended up having to stake the pilfering bloodsucker as he attacked Sookie. And thus we were exposed to the first gushy vampire true death on “True Blood,” and we learned…the true death ain’t pretty.

Godric (Allan Hyde)
Upon hearing legend of Godric, we all expected this ancient vampire to be an insanely ferocious monster. However, he was quite the opposite. Godric was the antithesis of the typical “True Blood” vampires. He was insightful and thoughtful and embraced the idea that vampires and humans could peacefully coexist. Godric allowed himself to be taken into custody by humans, and he met the sun with remorse for a life of violence but as a martyr, hoping his death would spur a movement toward a healing in vampire-human relations.

Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley)
Okay, so they didn’t kill her off the show. “True Blood” has the vampire “out clause” they can use to kill a character but keep him or her in the show. But who wasn’t stunned when Debbie Pelt blasted a hole in the side of Tara’s head with a shotgun? Another case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Tara was simply trying to save Sookie from being killed (again!…something that always seems to get her into trouble) but ended up with a skull full of buckshot. Not a good way to go. But thanks to the ever entertaining Pam, Tara was turned into a vampire and brought back for all new adventures. And another shocking death happened just moments after Tara died…

Debbie Pelt (Brit Morgan)
Of course, the death of Debbie Pelt goes hand in hand with that of Tara as they occurred about 20 seconds apart. Although viewers all sort of figured that Debbie would bite it sooner or later, it was hard to imagine that she would die at the hands of Sookie behind a shotgun while begging for her life. One of the more underrated characters of the show, Debbie always brought tension and excitement wherever she went. Debbie knew how to stir the pot, and it made for great TV. And she died during one of the most shocking scenes in the history of the series.

Talbot (Theo Alexander)
Talbot seemed almost untouchable. He’d been Russell Edgington’s consort for 700 years, and the king was very much in love with him. But with love comes vulnerability, and Eric realized that. The Viking used Talbot’s attraction to him to lure the Greek into a compromising position, where it was quite easy to “stab him in the back” and seriously wound Russell. The shock of the death was felt by Edgington miles away and evoked the wrath of the ancient vampire like never before.

Franklin Mott (James Frain)
Franklin was a Brit vampire (who didn’t look completely unlike Train’s lead singer Pat Monahan), hired by Russell as an investigator, and he was out of his mind. Sure, most of the vampires on “True Blood” are unstable, but Franklin was a special kind of crazy. His playful relationship with Tara turned obsessive and finally violent. Tara managed to escape the clutches of the psycho-vamp by drinking his blood for strength and mashing Franklin’s head in with a blunt object, only to have a showdown with him in Merlotte’s parking lot after he recovered. She was surely dead if not for the heroic actions of Jason Stackhouse…and his wooden bullets.

The Magister (Zeljko Ivanek)
The Magister was an old and powerful judge vampire. He oversaw the vampiric hierarchy and enforced the rules. That rule enforcement, and the fact that The Magister wasn’t for harvesting humans for food as Russell was, caused quite a rift between the judge and the king. And, after being held by silver chains and forced to wed King Edgington and Queen Sophie-Anne Leclerq, he was nearly left in the cellar of Fangtasia to rot. But on a whim Russell decapitated The Magister with his own cane in a truly cool “True Blood” death scene.

Russell Edginton (Denis O’Hare)
All great things must come to an end, and that includes Russell Edgington…twice. Russell was consistently one of the best characters on the show, and after being exposed to the sun and encased in silver and concrete by Eric and Bill, it seemed as if one of the show’s best villains was to be no more. However, Russell managed to escape his rocky tomb to rise again to wreak more havoc. Russell was finally given the true death by the vampire from whom he had taken the most. He was staked by Eric Northman.

Newscaster Killed by Russell (if anyone can provide his name, let us know in the comments)
“Why would we seek equal rights? You are not our equals. We will eat you after we eat your children.” This sentiment perfectly sums up Russell’s problem with trying to achieve equality with humans because he felt vampires were far superior and they should, in no way, be wasting their time slumming with mortal fleshbags. And he got this point across to the world by ripping out the spine of a television newscaster in an insanely quick and violent fashion on live TV. This was another highlight of the show, and every “True” fan clearly remembers Russell’s speech to humanity while holding a piece of the dead newscaster’s spine in one bloody hand. A stunning kill indeed. Long live the king.

“True Blood” Season 6 kicks off June 16th. Guest stars include Rutger Hauer (as a mysterious figure with deep ties to Sookie and Jason), “Rubicon”’s Arliss Howard (as Louisiana Governor Truman Burrell), “Friday Night Lights” star Jurnee Smollett-Bell (as do-gooder Nicole), Karolina Wydra (as Violet, a strong, sexy, possibly dangerous vamp), Luke Grimes (as a circa ’70s-made vamp who is smart, spiritual, and emotionally deeper than any other bloodsucker we’ve seen before), and “90210”’s Amelia Rose Blaire (as Howard’s onscreen daughter).
